You guys are so cute in your little airplane! This was very interesting. I know nothing about this stuff, seeing as how I'm the sort of person who takes one look at a little airplane and says "NO WAY IN HELL WOULD I EVER GET IN THAT THING." But I'm glad you have one! Does it fly to Seattle?

I am SO GLAD that you've posted on this subject, because I have always been curious about your adventures. I think it's nutty that owning/operating a small aircraft is considered to be the realm of multi-millionaires when it sounds like you guys spend less than most boat, cottage or RV owners I know. And the flexibility afforded you is amazing. I WISH I had a hobby that was so useful.

If ever you want to hop on up to Ottawa, we've a local airport right around the corner. You can check out the National Aviation Museum AND the stables where the Mounties keep there horses, too. We'd love to have you visit.

My mom and I are flying from Colorado to California at the end of the month with both my kids. Pretty much makes me wish we had a plane!

How interesting was this! You told me about the lack of air conditioning, but I was very interested about the gas, time and cost of the plane. Woo Hoo to you for marrying such a talented guy!

We have a bunch of fun stories about flying in just 2 brief years of aircraft ownership. My Grandfather was an owner for something like 20 or 30 years and really instilled this passion for aviation. I'd love if we can keep this up for that long!

Just this morning, I was in Oklahoma at 7am and back at the office by 9:30am. There is some really amazing utility for many regional missions (business or leisure).

Like A'Dell said, the west coast is better left to the airlines for us unless we want to spend a day or two in New Mexico or visit our friends scattered throughout California.

A couple of other datapoints:
* Our plane was in Ohio with the same owner since 1979. He was retiring from flying. He told me that he cried like a baby when we flew it out of his airport.

* Automation is really cool! I typically only hand-fly about 10-15 minutes of our regular flights. Our autopilot and GPS handle the climb, enroute cruise, descent and approach procedures until within about 2 minutes of landing. The autopilot is normally more precise and frees me up to monitor our progress and keep up with 3 radios.

* Weather is scary. Data is king. Our GPS displays near real-time Nexrad radar downlink from the XM satellite network. Lightning strikes out to 200 miles are available on another display and indicate strong storms. We use these and work with Air Traffic Control to stay as far away from the action as possible or we stay home.

* Air conditioning. At our airport, it takes only about 10 minutes from startup to lift-off and maybe another 8-10 to get to 5000 where ambient air temperature is in the 70s and dropping. The girls get to hide out in the car at 60 degrees while I do the hot work.

* Beverage Service. I always ask, but never seem to get very good service. I'll have to talk to management about that.

Ooh! This was such a fun post, A'Dell. Thanks for sharing it. What a blessing to have this wonderful part of your lives.

This was FASCINATING. I'm so glad you wrote about it! I also have always wanted to know more when you mention you're flying to visit your parents. I like that Chris added more info in the comments, too!

This was very interesting indeed! I know nothing about small craft aviation. Fascinating! I'm also a wee bit jealous.

So cool and so interesting!
What do you do when Claire has to potty?

Such an interesting post! Thanks for sharing. :)

The potty issue is going to be very interesting as the kids get out of diapers. Our flights within Texas are normally only about 1.5 hours and she does great with those. For longer trips, we ask her about 5 times before we leave and then plan stops every 2+ hours.

My husband has said several times over the years that this is something he is interested in. We do not live close to family and it would be so much easier if we could fly ourselves. Thanks for this post!

Very cool!

I would like a little airplane. Except that I suspect that Matt would not fit. He barely fits in commercial size airplanes.

My dad wants an airplane too, only my mom won't let him get one.

This is AWESOME! My husband would love to learn to fly and, well, you make it sound a lot less scary (and more economical!) than I envisioned.

This part made me giggle: "And if I did? I would keep them in a safe deposit box like a responsible person and not like an elderly duck that wears clothes."

This is like, the COOLEST BLOG POST EVER. Seriously! What a neat way to travel. It was fascinating to read about. I also love your explanations about the costs and everything. Makes total sense!
