I was getting dressed Tuesday morning, listening to the radio as a I normally do, and the guys I listen to started in on how that day, Tuesday, August 10, is the worst day of the year.
August is the worst month of the year. There's no question about this. It's hot, godawful HOT, and at this point you are ready for summer to be OVER. You're so close to football season, and yet so far away. You sweat through every article of clothing you have no matter how much deodorant you put on. You chield your eyes from windows as you walk by because of the heat. School is about to start. And it's HOTTTTTT. There's nothing going on except the tick-tock of WHEN WILL AUGUST BE OVER? The only thing to look forward to is September.
The first week of August isn't so bad. It's a new month, kinda cool. What's going to happen in August? You don't really remember yet how deplorable August can be. You're still high from the awesome that is June and July.
But the second week is the WORST. It's still frakking August. There are THREE DAMN WEEKS of August left. Weeks 3 and 4 are okay. In the third week, you can feel secure in the knowledge that August is almost over. ANd the fourth week? CAKE! Football starts next week people!
But that second week sucks.
And Tuesday is the worst day of the week. Monday has its expected suckiness, but Tuesday is sooooo faaaaaar from Friday. Tuesday has no redeeming characteristics.
And so, the second Tuesday of August is obviously the worst day of the year.

It turned out to not be such a bad day for me, personally, but I thought about it all day. At the end of the day, I was in total agreement: August does suck. I can't wait for this month to be over.
It's too hot and we hide inside all day, I don't want to cook so we eat out, I am tired of these looong days where the baby stays up too late and there's nothing INTERESTING to do because it's too fucking HOT all the time. All of the reject clothes from the summer are on sale, but they're the rejects so who wants those? There's no television to watch and we've already seen all the good movies.
Hell, you can't even TRAVEL anywhere to escape because everywhere you go? It's still August.

It's not even that this is a bad August. There are no catastrophes or bad news. We're doing fine and dandy. It's just...August. Bleh.
September can't come soon enough.

yea, when you walk outside to water the flowers and immediately break into a sweat, its time for summer to be OVER. maybe august will realize it sucks one day and try to conform to the cool, haphazard, fun days of its brothers-june and july. or maybe, in some freak chance, it could be like its distance relative-april. wouldnt it be nice if it was april and NOT AUGUST, i agree, its an effing month.

Agreed. I hate August.

I rarely disagree with you but I must in this case. My birthday is in August and in some years it falls on the second Tuesday! Also I'm a teacher who starts back to school September 1. While I agree July is better than August, I still love August because I can be home with my kids. And here in NE, July is the hot month (I LOVE the heat) and while August can still start hot, it quickly turns chilly...blegh to chilly! August in my book is the #3 month, just behind July and June and June only beats August by the slim margin of being the beginning of summer rather than the impending beginning of school.

I totally agree with you. I get so frustrated in August that there are all these cute fall clothes in the stores, and yet it will still be, like, two months before you can actually wear them. At least September isn't so hot, but it is, after all, still summer for most of September, and way too hot for proper fall clothes.
August just makes me wish for fall, which seems like it should be just around the corner, but is actually not until October!

One of the good things about living where I do? August doesn't suck. But it rains the rest of the year and our housing costs are RIDICULOUS, so not sure it's a fair trade.
I will just hope August goes by quickly for you.
